Balance is Better
As the winter sporting season gets into full swing, we are hearing many children talk about their sporting experiences. Often you can correctly predict the answer to the question "how did your team play on the weekend?" The answer being either "we won" or "we lost".
We know winning and losing is part of sport, but why is the outcome often the first thing that is referred to? Mere focus on outcomes doesn't provide much room for growth, so how might we shift this mindset for our young athletes? The following article "How to help athletes with failure" provides a range of excellent tips for parents and coaches to further support the development of a growth mindset.
Some key questions after games (regardless of the outcome) will support this growth mindset thinking.
- What did the team do really well?
- What's the next step for the team?
- In what ways did I show persistence/ effort throughout the game?
- Did I maintain a positive attitude to support my teammates even when facing challenges?
- How did I react to feedback from coaches/ peers?
