Dear Parents, Caregiver and Children,
It feels bizarre to already be saying we are nearly at the end of Term 2.
Over the last couple of weeks it has been a real joy seeing the winter sporting codes slowly start back up and our children hit the fields or courts with an eagerness and willingness to give their best.
This week our children have been applying their learning and getting themselves ready for the very important Student Led Conferences next week. It is always an exciting time for them to be able to share and celebrate their goals, learning's and achievements with you. Please do take the time to book via www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and use the code e2jfa.
On Monday I spoke to the children about being brave and the feeling of anxiety or nervousness. Often events like Cross Country or one-off learning challenges like ICAS can trigger these feelings. I shared this quote with them below and reminded them that often when you feel like this it is because you are about to do something brave. Being brave is showing courage and courage is an attribute that we want to develop and strengthen in all of us.
With this being our last newsletter for the Term. I would like to once again say thank you for this term and the support offered. We look forward to our school dates, events and learning experiences continuing in a more regular vein next term.
Warm Regards
Geoff
The schools Agricultural Day will be held on Tuesday 13th October.
We would love to get as many children involved as possible. If you are planning to bring an animal or you would like to find out more please complete the form below so that the day can be planned and organised.
Lambs, Goats and Calves
Lamb and Kid Goat competition will be run as usual. The school may be able to help with sourcing lambs and goats and provide tips and advice on rearing them.
Please indicate if your child would like to bring a calf to Ag Day. If there is enough interest, we will be happy to run a calf competition and will put in place procedures recommended to prevent the spread of Mycoplasma Bovis.
Chickens
Chickens can be very rewarding for a child to rear and we would like to incorporate this into our Ag Day as well.
A batch of 1 day old red/brown shaver chicks will be ordered and will be delivered to the school at the beginning of September.
The children will rear the chicks at home for approximately 6 weeks and bring them to school on Agday for judging. Chickens will be judged on 3 categories; Rearing (appearance and health), Childrens knowledge and handling and a Diary that the children will keep about the life of their chicken.
Chickens are very easy to rear. They only require 10- 20mins of handling each day. They can be reared for six weeks in a large box or plastic tub with some netting over the top. The school will provide information on how to care for the chicks and can help with re-homing the chickens after Agday if needed. It has been recommended from parents at the other schools to rear 1 or 2 extra chickens and then bring the best one per child on the day. The chickens will need to be brought to school on Agday in a secure cage, such as a cat cage, but one cage can be shared by 2-3 chickens. The chicks are a commercial laying breed and are sexed on hatching, so will all be hens.
At this stage a chicken competition is not offered for Group Day but the committee is looking into maybe doing this in the future.
We will need to order the chicks from the breeder in July so please indicate by July 13th if you would like to be involved in the competition and how many chicks you would like to order. Chicks will cost around $6 each(price to be confirmed)
Hamilton North Group Day & Waikato Show
Lambs, Calves and Goats can also compete at North Waikato Group Day on Monday 19th October and at the Waikato show on Thursday 29th October if you choose.
Parent Help
Agricultural Day is run by parent volunteers, If your child is involved in Agricultural Day you will be asked to support the running of the day in some way.
Our School Cross Country event was held last Wednesday.

July 1 & July 2
This term (Week 10) we will be offering Student Led Conferences (SLC) for all families and children. These conferences replace the ones we missed at the end of last term but will also play a more significant part in our reporting to parent process than previous years. Due to Covid19 we have had to rethink our written reports for this term. It is simply not feasible to provide a written report with the validity that we are normally able to do. This term we will be providing a written report that describes your child's learning behaviours as well as gives you an indication as to their current achievement levels in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. You will receive this at the SLC. In addition, at the SLC your child will showcase to you their Learning Journal (LJ) and examples of learning that reflect their current development.
Due to the added information we aim to offer at these SLC's we have changed the structure slightly. This time around they will be 40 minutes long and shared with only 1 other family per Kaitiaki Teacher (i.e: Roopuu Maahuri will have no more than 8 parents in at any given time).
If you have any questions please feel free to reach out and ask.
Cheers
Geoff

As part of the continuing fundraising for the school pool upgrade we are asking for your support with selling chocolates, one box per family. Last year the school raised over $5,000, which is a significant contribution, and is hoping to reach a similar target this year.
The oldest or only child in each family will be sent home with one box of fundraising chocolate. We appreciate that there are families who would prefer to support the school in other ways. Please contact the School Office if you DO NOT want to sell chocolates before the boxes go out on Monday.
There are 36 bars of Whittakers chocolate bars in each box which sell for $2 each ($72 per box) Please return the cash in the envelope provided to the school office, or pay via internet banking (account number 12-3171-0283600-00) last name and chocolates as a reference), by the first Wednesday of Term 3 - 22nd July. If you are able to sell more please email or drop in to the school office.
We suggest you sell to family members, colleagues in the workplace, at busy sports fields, friends or neighbours. If the children are involved in selling, they should do so
under adult supervision, especially if selling door to door.
Thank you for your support.
