Dear Parents, Caregivers and Children,

Welcome back to Term 3. Over the break Amy, the boys and I were lucky enough to sneak down to Wanaka for a 4 day skiing trip and enjoy the sights and experiences that that part of our country has on offer. It really is spectacular. One day it was pretty wet and we decided to have a very local day, bit of shopping in and out of the 462 ski and snowboard shops that exist and then back to our accommodation. On this day we spent over half of it just relaxing around and playing 'Monoply Deal' (an outstanding game). It was a really fun day, partly because I kept winning, but also that when you are away from your own home you don't see the many jobs that need to be done and can simply pause. A lesson in this and I feel it would be a lesson for many of us, is that sometimes we need to give ourselves permission to relax and enjoy our own space rather than racing from one job to the next. Skiing and Snowboarding (having Harry in my ear reminding me it is not just a Skiing Trip), was also an obvious highlight. While down there I entered a new phase and what in no doubt will be an increasing familiar phase in my parenting. I had to succumb to the idea that both boys a more confident and skilled on the snow than myself and while obviously proud of them, there was a little moment that you think to yourself how is this happened? So you push yourself a bit more, inevitably to fall, crash and damage your ego even more... A holiday full of good times and life lessons. 

This term we welcome our International Students from China. I am delighted with how well they have settled into our school. Our children have been very supportive and you would all be proud with how they have welcomed them into our school and their learning environments. It has been wonderful to see the sharing of cultures and interest this has created. So far the experience has been a positive one for all. We look forward to the next 6 weeks of culture sharing and relationship building. 

Finally, on a very different note as a teaching team we have recently had some robust discussion around our Powerful Learner Assembly and the kind of impact these have on students in regards to motivation and most importantly confidence with and towards learning. An email will be sent home this afternoon to further explain our thinking and changes to these assemblies.

Blocks for Kakano 9

Our new entrant learning environment is wanting some wooden blocks for the classroom, if you have some that you no longer need can you please see Kim in Kakano 9.

Mathletics

Mathletics subscriptions are still available - the cost is now $15 which gives access until the end of February next year.

Agricultural Day

To be held on Tuesday October 15th.  

There is still time to register your interest in bringing a kid goat or lamb please get in touch with Christine at the School Office.  Further communication about Agricultural Day will be via email.  Due to lack of registrations there will be no calf competition again this year.

OnThrusday 8th August Rōpū Kākano children will bea having a visit to the Zoo.  Cost is $13 per child and $6.50 for adults.  Permission via Kindo.

Sports Camp Fundraiser

On  Saturday before the holidays a group of parents and children supported a  Sausage sizzle fundraiser  at Mitre 10 Mega. They raised an impressive $464.5o, thank you to the school community for their support.

Marzipan Drama Classes

Marzipan have gained a reputation in New Zealand for the development of shy children, especially those with anxiety, autism and selective mutism.  Saying that, this is a class for the super crazy dramatic types too as we focus on positive leadership and social skills.   Our classes focus on inner and outer self-confidence, and are super fun and exciting for children.  Parents are kept up to date with weekly emails about what is covered in class and why as well as what you can work on at home.  We have two awesome showcases at the end of every term too, so you can see your child's development first hand as they perform in one of our termly productions.

Action Indoor Sports Hamilton

Our Indoor Cricket and Football Competitions/Sessions are on a Friday afternoon, and we have more space available for new teams or individual registrations. Saturday Music Classes

Enrolments are now open for Term Three 2019 at the Waikato Community School of Music (formerly Hamilton Community Centre of Music). The first session is on Saturday 3rd August. The school caters for all ages (3 to retired) and ability levels. We offer both group-format music tuition in a range of instruments, as well as an Exam Stream one-to-one option for students who wish to prepare for external exams and/or work towards NCEA credits.  A music appreciation/readiness programme (Music Makers) is available from age 3. Young Voices children’s choir caters for those ages 9+. Class times are between 8am and 1:00pm on Saturdays during primary school terms. The centre is located on the University of Waikato campus in Hillcrest.
